Thank you for ensuring that all kids have access to the care they need.

Teen Van Update Prepared for Tahbazof Family
Fall 2023

Your generosity is changing lives.

Thanks to you, the Teen Van provides young people with free comprehensive health care when and where they need it, hosting nearly 3,000 patient visits in 2022.

The mobile clinic and its bilingual, multidisciplinary staff have bridged geographic, social, and financial barriers for nearly three decades, providing thousands of Bay Area youth with the primary care they need. For many uninsured and underinsured adolescents and young adults, the Teen Van is the first comfortable and safe place to turn to for a physical, a mental health checkup, blood work, or counseling around reproductive and sexual health. It is a lifeline for immigrant and LGBTQ+ youth and others who struggle to access health care in traditional settings.

The Teen Van's dedicated specialists meet young people where they are, relying entirely on philanthropic support like yours to travel regularly to high schools, community colleges, youth centers, and food banks.

Your support has a lasting impact on young people, their families, and their communities. Together, we are enhancing our services so that all youth receive the exceptional care they deserve. Your commitment makes all the difference, and we are grateful for your partnership.

Providing Health and Hope at a Pivotal Time of Life

You help young people like Luis* every day.

As the pandemic has receded, the Teen Van has experienced a significant uptick in the number of immigrant youth lacking health insurance and basic items needed for the first day of school, including immunizations, physicals, and school supplies.

Luis, who recently fled violence in Central America, was one such Teen Van patient.

After spending time in a large immigration detention facility in Texas, he was sent to the Bay Area to live with his older brother's family. In a short questionnaire, Luis indicated that his family was experiencing food insecurity and lacked access to health care. After providing medical care, the Van team aided him in applying for California's Medicaid health care program (Medi-Cal) and arranged for grocery orders to be delivered to his home, providing nutritous food for him and his whole family. Luis also scheduled a follow-up visit to the Van at San Mateo High School after the new school year began.

Your commitment helps young people thrive.

"Having an opportunity in a safe place to have a discussion about contraception, assertiveness, the impact of decisions, and how to make good ones isn’t something I can put a number to as far as impact. But these discussions can have ripple effects in communities and families—and the future experiences of their children."

Arash Anoshiravani, MD, MPH, medical director of the Teen Van, who has led the program since 2019

With your help, we provide convenient, trusted care.

In 2022, the Teen Van traveled to more than 15 partner sites between San Francisco and San Jose, including high schools, youth centers, food banks, and community colleges, providing no-cost care to people ages 12 to 25. The medical team tailors its services to best address patient needs at each location. The staff's commitment—and its diverse makeup—help create trust and rapport with the most vulnerable youth.

The Van has provided more than 16,000 patient visits, with nearly 5,000 patients served. About 40 percent of these young people have experienced homelessness.

In the fall of 2023, thanks to support from the Feigenbaum Family Foundation, we will begin using a second, smaller vehicle to reach even more youth! It will give our team the flexibility to provide additional days of service, offering more mental health visits or vaccine clinics that do not require the full team and the larger vehicle.

Meeting Growing Demand

You help us respond when our community needs us the most.

In recent years, youth and their families have felt a striking amplification of the medical, economic, and psychosocial challenges they face. Whether these complications predated the COVID-19 pandemic, were exacerbated by it, or are new, they show little to no signs of receding.

Many of our patients experience family instability, homelessness, immigration journeys, and interrupted education. The impact of the pandemic was sudden and extreme for underserved families, and the Teen Van quickly adapted to continue providing care. Now, the youth we serve are facing food and housing insecurity in escalating numbers, and the demand for mental health services from young people who are struggling with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health issues continues to climb.

Thanks to your generosity, we are expanding our services to meet the growing need by providing:

  • Short-term food deliveries and housing-related bill coverage (utilities)
  • Increased access to mental health services
  • Physicals and immunizations to recent immigrants, enabling them to register for school (in partnership with Sequoia High School)
  • Nutritional training to educate youth on the importance of healthy living. In San Mateo County, 17.3 percent of all children live in poverty, while another 5.9 percent of children live in food-insecure households.
  • Long-term partnerships supporting underserved communities in East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Redwood City, and other cities.

Through ongoing support from Packard Children's Association of Auxiliaries for Children, we make hygiene kits, school supplies, and clothing available to youth at our partner sites, whether they visit the Van or not.

"Our patients want to be heard. They want to be seen. It's important to create safe spaces so they can make healthy choices for their lives." – Rosa Maldonado,
Assistant Clinic Manager and Medical Assistant

Every $1,000 invested in the Teen Van leads to a savings of $10,000 in community health care costs.

We couldn't have said it better!

A young fan of the Van made our staff this special surprise that is proudly displayed inside the mobile clinic.

Thank you for ensuring that these critical services are accessible to youth in the Bay Area. Your support is making a lasting difference!
